What is a Bursary: A bursary is a monetary award given to students or individuals to help them pursue their education or training. Unlike loans, bursaries do not have to be repaid. They are typically awarded based on financial need, academic achievement, or other criteria set by the organization providing the bursary.

How do I Apply: Applying for a bursary does not guarantee acceptance, as the number of applicants can often surpass the bursary funds available. When that happens, applicants are chosen based on the highest amount of financial need. Bursary applications received after the deadline will not be accepted.

Here are our top 5 bursary application tips:

  1. Make sure you fill in the whole application. We can only assess your financial need if we have all the details.
  2. Submit on time. Take note of the deadline and make sure you apply before the deadline. Early is always best so you have time to ask questions or fix problems.
  3. Ensure your social insurance number is added. Without your social insurance number, your bursary cannot be awarded. To add your SIN you can enter it through your ACSIS account with the button “Update SIN” located below Financial Aid on the left-hand side.
  4. Make sure you apply for OSAP or out-of-province funding if you are a domestic student.
  5. Include your financial resources. Include information about money coming in, so the committee can see if the budget balances. Unrealistic budgets may be disqualified.

Who qualifies for this bursary?

  • A South African Citizen
  • Enrolled in a public college for further education and training in South Africa
  • Only full-time applicants may be registered for the National Certificate (Vocational) or Report 191 (Nated).

Would you still be eligible for a bursary the next year if your academic performance was poor?

Students seeking financial aid of any type must achieve great academic outcomes because financial resources are scarce in South Africa. In addition to giving qualifying students financial aid, the F.E.T. Colleges Bursary Scheme seeks to close the large skills gap in our country.
If academic achievement is not promoted, these talent shortages will not be addressed. Therefore, a student will not be qualified for a scholarship the next year if they fail their academic courses.
