Scholarship At Mauritius-Africa & Requirements 2024/2025

Scholarships for full-time, on-campus undergraduate and graduate studies tenable in public Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Mauritius are being offered by the Government of Mauritius to qualified South Africans for the 2024 academic year, which begins in September 2024.

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) is the Nominating Agency for South Africans who wish to apply for the Mauritius-Africa Scholarship Scheme. The information below is for South African applicants only. Applicants from other eligible countries should contact their government or a local representative of the Government of Mauritius for information on how to apply.

Candidate Requirements
  • South African citizens in good health and with a strong academic record;
  •  Candidates must have an interest in studying in Mauritius and demonstrate a commitment to the development of South Africa;
  •  Candidates must be available to study in Mauritius at the start of their academic programme in September 2024;
  •  All applicants must meet the entry criteria for their selected study programme in Mauritius;
  •  All applicants must meet the minimum academic requirement for entry into a similar programme at a South African university;
  •  All candidates must have proficiency in English;
  •  Not be in receipt of a scholarship from any other public source in Mauritius;
  •  Applicants must have already applied for full-time on-campus studies at any public Higher Education Institution in Mauritius for the academic year starting in 2024. This application must be made as soon as the HEIs have opened their application windows on their respective websites. An applicant may either:
    (a) obtain a conditional offer (letter of admission) from their chosen Mauritian public HEI and submit this along with the scholarship application: OR
    (b) submit a receipt of payment of the application fee from their chosen Mauritian public HEI along with the scholarship application;
  • Awardees should abide by latest government regulations regarding public health;
  • Awardees should abide to the protocols setup by Mauritian authorities for passengers travelling to Mauritius;
  • Applicants must be prepared to undergo a medical check-up as per the Passport and Immigration Office requirements (http://passport.govmu.org), in any public hospital in Mauritius and the test results shall be submitted to the Passport and Immigration Office, with a copy to the Ministry, not later than one month after arrival in Mauritius.

Undergraduate Scholarship Applicants:

  • Must have successfully completed National Senior Certificate with a Bachelor’s pass and a minimum of 60% average mark achieved, excluding Life Orientation subject;
  • Applicants should be above 18 years of age and should not have reached their 26th birthday by 01 January 2025;
  • Candidates already holding an undergraduate degree will not be considered.

For PhD programme:

  • Must hold an MPhil research degree or equivalent in the relevant field;
  • Direct entry will be allowed to the Higher Education Institution provided the applicants meet the requirements (indicated in Section 1.6) of the Higher Education Institution.

For MPhil or MPhil/PhD programme:

  • Must hold a recognised undergraduate degree with at least an upper second class degree (or CPA / GPA greater than 60%) and preferably with a Masters’ degree and meet the requirement of the Higher Education institution.
  • Applicants should not have reached 40 years of age by January 1, 2025;
  • Applicants must provide the name and written acceptance of their proposed supervisor(s). The list of research themes/research interests can be consulted from the websites of the different HEIs;
  • All applicants should submit an Abridged Research Proposal for MPhil/PhD as per the format below along with their application:
    1. Proposed Title of Research;
    2. Aims/Objectives of your Research (max 200 words);
    3. Background and significance of your research (max 200 words);
    4. Brief description of Methodology, indicating clearly how you intend to conduct the research and the data collection (Max 300 words);
    5. Tentative timeframe of your study, with an emphasis on data collection;
    6. Any equipment, Lab, software… that will be required;
    7. Name and contact details of identified supervisors in Mauritius
  • Applicants already holding a Ph.D. degree or its equivalent will not be considered.

Bursary Inclusion

The Mauritius Government offers:

  •  Tuition fees and course-related costs of up to MUR 100,000;
  •  A monthly living allowance to the value of MUR 14,200 (approximately R5 300);
  •  Students will be entitled to free basic health care in public hospitals in Mauritius;
  •  Return airfare to and from Mauritius by the most economical route.

In terms of accommodation:
Awardees will have to make prior arrangements with the HEI in Mauritius regarding available accommodation facilities.

The South African Government will provide:

  • One way flight ticket to Mauritius;
  • Settlement allowance;
  • Pre-departure orientation;
  • SAQA verification of qualification;
  • Board exam fee upon graduation (where applicable).

Step One: Submit an application for admission to identified eligible institutions in Mauritius by the closing date.

The final due date for submission of a conditional offer/proof of application is April 5, 2024.

STEP TWO: Complete the Mauritius Africa Scholarship Scheme application form and email it to mauritiusapplications@dhet.gov.za no later than March 22, 2024. At this point, applicants are not required to complete section 6 (medical certificate). Applicants are requested to make sure they use the correct application form for their level of study.

The following documents MUST accompany the completed application form:

  •  Certified copy of the birth certificate (if you do not have a birth certificate, an affidavit stating so will be required);
  • Certified copy of Identity Document;
  • Certified copy of biodata page of the passport;
  •  Certified copies of all post-school academic transcripts and qualification certificates;
  •  Copy of letter of conditional offer by a public Higher Education Institution in Mauritius (if available at time of application) OR proof of application/ copy of acknowledgment notices from a Mauritian public HEI that the application has been made;
  •  All postgraduate (Master’s and Ph.D.) applications must attach an abridged research plan, including research aims and objectives, methodology, and social relevance of the proposed study. Please refer to the guidelines for information about the study plan.

All documents submitted must be clear and in PDF format (no photographs of documents will be accepted).

STEP THREE: Shortlisted applicants may be required to complete an online questionnaire that will be sent in due course.

Following receipt of the online questionnaire, there will be further shortlisting of applicants going into the next round of selection who may be invited to attend an interview between 01 – 05 April 2024. Successful applicants from the interviews will be informed by 10 April 2024 of the next steps.

ONLY nominated applicants will be requested to submit the medical certificate completed and stamped by a Registered Medical Practitioner in Section 6 of the Mauritius-Africa Scholarship application form. Applicants should be prepared to pay for the medical checkup. The fully completed application document (including section 6) should be submitted to the DHET by no later than 15 April 2024.

STEP FOUR: Nominated applicants will be informed of their final nomination and their application will be further reviewed by the Government of Mauritius and the final decision on the successful applicants will be made.
